President Trump is likely to face a significant amount of backlash for this perceived inconsistency. In the ongoing feud between the president and the Speaker of the House, Trump recently grounded Speaker Nancy Pelosi and canceled her planned trip to visit the troops in Afghanistan.
Not long after Pelosi suggested that the annual State of the Union Address be postponed until the government shutdown was ended, Trump refused to allow Pelosi to fly with government funded airplanes. He said that she would have to fly commercial on her own dime.
But just hours after the president’s announcement to Pelosi, First Lady Melania Trump was flying to Mar-a-Lago, the president’s residence in Florida. She was headed there on a government jet.
Politico writer Jake Sherman found this out while listening to air traffic control and heard that EXEC1F was headed to the Palm Beach airport.
“EXEC1F appears to be headed to Palm Beach. ATC just said they will have to do some serious vectoring to get the plane in line with the rest of the Palm Beach traffic,” he tweeted.
“EXEC1F is typically the callsign for a plane with the first lady on it.”
Twitter became alive with reactions.
“So Trump denies the Speaker of the House the ability to visit troops in Afghanistan, but Melania gets to take a trip to Florida ahead of the holiday weekend,” tweeted pollster Matt McDermott.
The president canceled Pelosi’s trip citing the government shutdown and the cost involved. So now he is going to face a media backlash for Melania’s visit to Florida ahead of the holiday weekend.
What do you think about this inconsistency? Is the backlash fair or unfair? We look forward to seeing your comments at the end of this article.
